Mastering the Four Failure Zones in Pool Hardscapes: Base, Joint, Drainage, and Surface in Concrete and Fiberglass Pool Hardscapes

July 29, 2026 | 9AM PT/12PM ET

Presenter:  Jeff Miller and Mike Carey, Marmiro Stones

Pool hardscapes don't usually fail at the surface; they fail underneath it, at the joints, and at the edge, months or years after the crew has left. Settling pavers, cracked tile lines, displaced coping, white efflorescent haze, and freeze-thaw spalling are the callbacks that erode margins and reputations, and nearly all of them are preventable on day one.
What too few crews account for is that the shell type changes the failure. A concrete shell is self-supporting, so a bad backfill becomes a deck problem. A fiberglass shell borrows its structure from the surrounding backfill, so the same mistake threatens the shell, the plumbing, and the deck at once. This session treats that distinction as central.
We move through a pool hardscape the way water and stress actually move through it - from the base up to the surface - isolating the four zones that generate the overwhelming majority of post-installation failures: the base and backfill envelope, the deck-to-shell joint and coping interface, water management (drainage and freeze-thaw), and the surface itself. For each zone, attendees learn the root cause behind the visible symptom, then the prevention detail specified separately for concrete and fiberglass where the two diverge.
Built for experienced installers, designers, and project managers who want fewer warranty visits, longer-lasting work, and a defensible answer when a client asks, "Why did this happen?"
