About Us
Watershape University (WU) is an IACET-accredited higher education institution focused on teaching the art and science of water.
We help water professionals realize their full potential.
Our Story
What is a Watershape?
Watershape (n.)
1. A structure that uses water in an artistic way.
2. Water as art in the form of a pool, spa, fountain, natural stream, lake, etc.
Watershaping (v.)
1. The art, act or practice of watershape design.
Watershaper (n.)
1. One who designs watershapes; especially professionals educated in the relevant arts and sciences of water.
Watershapes (like swimming pools) may look simple, but their design and construction are complex. There is more than meets the eye. Indeed, the types of pools our students build are often worthy of a magazine cover. They are works of art, not just construction projects.
Where can someone go to learn how to build pools, or build a customer's dream back yard? Sure, you can learn it on the job, but where did they learn from? And you think higher education classes are expensive...the alternative is learning the hard way. We've had countless students tell us stories of why they came to WU. They included horror stories of pool walls that had caved in, concrete that had failed, cracked and even fallen apart (literally). These are hard lessons to learn.
WU offers a chance to learn wisdom from the masters of the trade, rather than having to earn wisdom in the field by making costly mistakes.
Furthermore, developing skills on the job is great, but skills alone can only take a professional so far. To grow and pursue mastery, you must be presented with the unknown, and take on challenges beyond your present skills.
That's where we come in.
Watershape University, est. 2019
Dave Peterson and Bill Drakeley, our founders, have dedicated decades to educating professionals in the watershaping industry. Dave is recognized for his expertise in swimming pool engineering and design, while Bill is a leader in shotcrete and construction. Both played pivotal roles in creating the industry’s first higher education curriculum. In 2019, following changes within their previous organization, they established Watershape University to advance specialized education for our field.
Many of the top pool designers, builders and thought leaders in the swimming pool and landscape architecture industries have joined the WU Faculty.
WU Curriculum
WU has five disciplines of study:
Our courses are third-party accredited by IACET®, so the CEU's can transfer to other institutions and industries.
We provide exceptional value to students in everything that we do. We aim to be the single best investment of time and resources for a watershape professional to advance their career and realize their full potential.
