ENGINEERING 3121:

Geotechnical Loads and the Unified Soil Classification System Premium Webinar

IACET CEUs offered: 0.1

Duration: 1 hour

Taught by: David Peterson

Engineering for Soil

The Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) provides a standardized organizational system for many different types of soils similar to the way the periodic table of the elements organizes all atoms. Because the structural engineering parameters of the various soil types are relatively consistent it is possible to codify such things as bearing capacity and lateral active pressures. This program maps the engineering parameters and identifies the source-code of the requirement. It is the basis for all watershape structural engineering!

This program requires a $75 fee which includes the key information in both a PDF and full-color poster which is the first in a series of WatershapeArts posters featuring both a beautiful image and useful information.

What you will learn.

Discuss the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).

Describe how certain structural engineering parameters of soils are used by structural engineers to guide their designs.

Identify the source of certain structural engineering parameters related to various soil types identified in the USCS.

Discuss the liability of using soil parameters – even if from a licensed geotechnical engineer – that may be less conservative than those prescribed by the IBC, IRC and ASCE-7.

David J. Peterson, P.E., IWI

Peterson is President/CEO of Watershape Consulting, Inc., an international planning, design and engineering firm providing owners, architects, contractors, and the legal profession with services relating to residential, commercial and institutional pools, spas and water features.
He obtained his B.S. Civil Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is a registered engineer in several states. Peterson has been in the watershape industry since 1994 when he began his career designing life support systems for large aquariums and marine mammal exhibits. He was Vice President Engineering at Polaris Pool Systems where he developed and patented several products.
Peterson reorganized the Genesis 3 Design Group into GENESIS® University in 2012. When GENESIS merged with the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) in 2016, Peterson became Director of Education for GENESIS, a position he held until forming Watershape University.
