The curriculum includes both hands-on instruction for application techniques, lecture, and supplemental instruction and reference materials.

Learning Outcomes:

Establish a base line of acceptable pool concrete surface substrates and surface profiles prepped and made ready for a new plaster application.

Discuss and demonstrate (in class) plaster design and mixology with related cementitious chemistry of a typical plaster mix.

Instruct on plaster application techniques and examine texture and bond ability characteristics.

Introduce moisture and submersion of new plaster applications and teach start up and pool care techniques for the new plaster.

CONSTRUCTION 4114: Essential Advanced Watershapes – Wellness
CONSTRUCTION 4114: Essential Advanced Watershape Construction - Wellness

Wellness is a broad term that encompasses everything from diet and exercise to mindfullness and physical therapy. As the watershaping industry embraces this healthy trend and growing market it is with little guidance on the underlying principles and risk in the design and construction phases. There is tremendous potential for our industry to become the leaders in this emerging space and it begins with the dynamic duo of Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D and David J. Peterson, P.E., IWI who will list several wellness elements and explain the physiology, design, construction and operation therof. Examples include dry saunas, steam rooms, aromatherapy, clay ball, heated rest, light therapy, Hammams, hydrotherapy, cold plunge, pools, hot tubs, massage and many more.

Learning Outcomes:

1. List wellness elements that builders and retailers can add to their portfolios, expanding their business into new profitable offerings with little or no competition.

2. Describe how wellness elements such as hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, light therapy and thermal therapy, affect mental, emotional and physical health and how to use these elements to control physiology in beneficial ways.

3. Discuss design principles important to the success of any wellness center from layout to details such as core elements, colors, materials, lighting and HVAC.

4. Appraise the importance of certain construction and operation considerations including vapor barriers, waterproofing, finish materials and building trades that may be unfamiliar to many pool builders.

Instructors:

Dave Peterson, P.E., IWI — President/CEO of Watershape Consulting, Inc.
Wallace J. Nichols, Ph.D. — Author of The Blue Mind

CONSTRUCTION 4271: Vanishing and Slot Edge Design, Engineering & Construction

Vanishing edge and slot-edge details continue to frame watershapes in creative and beautiful ways. Comprehending the infinite architectural options, underlying structural and finish challenges, and fluid mechanics can be an intimidating task. This focused eight-hour program deconstructs the artistry of the edge and exposes the technical challenges with solutions that include everything from reinforcing steel to new fluid engineering analysis tools. Students are expected to have a smartphone or tablet to access the analysis tools. A laptop is not required.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Classify and identify edge design details for water-in-transit pools, spas and waterfeatures.
  2. Examine structural requirements from soil, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads to reinforcing steel and concrete in accordance with building codes and standards.
  3. Establish fluid mechanics performance criteria guided by visual and acoustic objectives and achieved through sound engineering practices.
  4. Develop accurate fluid engineering calculations and diagrams using new analysis tools developed by David J. Peterson, P.E., IWI.

CONSTRUCTION 3341: Essential Plumbing Workshop
CONSTRUCTION 3341: Essential Plumbing Workshop

If the heart of a pool is the pump and filter, then the veins and arteries are the pipes which transport the fluids or gasses critical to proper operation of the watershape. Just like in our bodies, if the circulation system is not optimized, then the whole body will not function as desired. This course not only teaches the basics for how to evaluate the plumbing system required for specific system being installed, but it also dives deeper into the specific means and methods necessary to install these elements in order to ensure the long term success of the project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Define proper means and methods for installing the various different plumbing systems commonly found within the swimming pool construction industry

2. Employ the means and methods to practice the skills necessary to properly execute these tasks in the field

3. Learn to correctly choose which materials will be appropriate for the specific scope of work for which they will be utilized

4. Apply basic hydraulic rules learned in the course to determine the proper sizing of piping materials for the specific applications for which they will be utilized
