Program Summaries

ENGINEERING 2331: Indoor Air Quality Design & Specification

There are multiple documents referenced by mechanical engineers in the design of HVAC and dehumidification systems for natatoriums. This program identifies those documents in a cohesive and comprehensive way to create a methodical approach to designing and specifying air handling systems. Beginning with the guest experience, design criteria is established and then best practices are used to define a design workflow that achieves the initial goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define the guest experience from the standpoint of indoor air quality performance criteria such as temperature, humidity and odors from chloramines, bromamines and other disinfection byproducts.
  • Identify the relevant standards, codes, and design references as well as potential equipment manufacturers for examples of how to interpret their performance specifications.
  • Analyze the HVAC and dehumidification requirements from return and supply duct sizes and locations to air turnover rates and mass of water removed through dehumidification.
  • Formulate a plan that optimizes the design for a safe and healthy indoor air quality.

Accreditation

International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET)

Duration: 1.25 hours

IACET CEUs: 0.1

All students who complete the course and evaluation form receive a Certificate of Completion documenting 0.1 IACET CEUs.

President/CEO — Watershape Consulting, Inc.

Peterson is President/CEO of Watershape Consulting, Inc., an international planning, design and engineering firm providing owners, architects, contractors, and the legal profession with services relating to residential, commercial and institutional pools, spas and water features.

He obtained his B.S. Civil Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is a registered engineer in several states. Peterson has been in the watershape industry since 1994 when he began his career designing life support systems for large aquariums and marine mammal exhibits. He was Vice President Engineering at Polaris Pool Systems where he developed and patented several products.

Peterson reorganized the Genesis 3 Design Group into GENESIS® University in 2012. When GENESIS merged with the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) in 2016, Peterson became Director of Education for GENESIS, a position he held until forming Watershape University.

Commercial pool and spa facilities require periodic renovations to erase wear and tear, implement new energy, health and safety measures and attract new members. Importantly, facilities now need to address the growing wellness trend which often includes new venues such as cold plunges, hydrotherapy, dry saunas, steam rooms and dozens of other options to stimulate the senses. This program addresses the overall management of the project from consultants and construction to schedule and cost expectations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess the needs, wants and ultimate goals of a major commercial renovation considering current trends for pools, spas and wellness elements.
  • Appraise the importance and qualifications of various consultants, general contractors and specialty contractors to perform the scope of work.
  • Evaluate realistic schedule expectations and discuss how to turn the negative experience and inconvenience of construction into a positive promotional opportunity for members.
  • Describe potential pitfalls and setbacks of commercial renovation projects.
